Review: Daredevil – no Affleck here…

Daredevil premiered on Netflix last week. Took me a while to get more than one episode in, but I’m liking it. For those who don’t know, Daredevil is about a blind lawyer named Matt Murdock (played by Charlie Cox) who lives in Hell’s Kitchen in New York. When he’s not practicing law he’s keeping the city safe by beating up bad guys.

What makes this series great is that we erase anything and everything from the fox version of this comic book character. We get the gritty Daredevil that we deserve. After the critics lauded Punisher: Warzone I didn’t think this type of Daredevil would see the light of day (pun intended), but I’m glad Marvel took the chance and brought an accurate version of Daredevil to the viewing audience.
It’s dark, not just in content, but in the lighting, it feels like I’m watching a movie rather than a tv series. I really also appreciated that the first episode wasn’t an origin story, sure we get the origin, but that wasn’t the focus of the first episode.

Be forewarned, this series is brutal and violent, and that’s perfect for what Daredevil is about. It also takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with one reference I was sold. I look forward to finishing this season, I didn’t want to binge watch this one, instead I want to savor it.
Catch season 1 on Netflix now!
