Avengers: Age of Ultron is about our favorite superhero team venturing out on another mission to save the world, in this case, it’s a mechanized creation that that’s highly intelligent, highly resourceful, and highly charismatic. The film is written and directed by the great Joss Wheadon, and stars an all-star cast; Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Cobie Smulders, Anthony Mackie, Hayley Atwell, Idris Elba, Stellan Skarsgård, James Spader, and Samuel L. Jackson. It opened at $187.7 million this weekend.
The good; everyone is back. They got the proverbial band back together. Unlike certain sequels, Avengers: Age of Ultron deliveries on every level.
The action is sublime, we get a lot of scenes that look like splash pages lifted directly from the pages of a comic book. It’s amazing that Wheadon was able to fit all these actors into this movie, let alone onto the screen at one time.
The humor is amazingly welcomed. We get those quick bursts of humor that lighten things up and gives us the breathing room after a huge action sequence. The timing of these jokes is awesome.
The acting is great, everyone knew that this is an ensemble movie, and everyone is given the right amount of time devoted to their character. At no point did I feel that I was bored with a scene.
I could go on and on here, but I have to mention the writing. Without the time and devotion spent on the story, this film wouldn’t be what it is. Number one in writing something like this… the villain is worth bringing together all these heroes. James Spader does a wonderful job voicing Ultron. The antagonist of the movie is both powerful and intelligent, the danger he provides the planet warrants assembling the Avengers. Bravo Mister Wheadon.
The bad; I can’t say I have anything here, it ended, and I didn’t want it to stop. One minor thing though, F.R.I.D.A.Y.’s Irish accent comes and goes.
The movie got Superman right in that Captain America has a moment and I said, “that’s Superman.” How can DC Comics not understand their once flagship character?
Avengers: Age of Ultron makes it impossible for the Justice League movie. With the backlash from Man of Steel’s 911 destruction, Avengers: Age of Ultron used their entire third act to save the civilians, what a novel idea… superheroes saving peoples’ lives? The standard has been set Justice League… just sayin’.
Interesting little tangent, not meant to be a criticism of this movie.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Deus ex machina reigned supreme, but it worked because it was done well. This is what a summer blockbuster movie should be. This is also a case where the audience was intently engaged in the movie, I did not experience the usual chatter or phone usage in the theatre at all! I’m attributing this to the film’s awesome-ness. I was pleasantly surprised by the time devoted to Hawkeye, look out for that stuff. Oh and I have to point out Vision… Paul Bettany’s make up is amazing, wow.
Another thing worth pointing out is they’ve added more diversity to the team’s roster. Go see this movie in the theatre!
