Star Wars Parody Music Videos – And Another One – All About That Base.

So, if you haven’t noticed in your Facebook stream, there is a new music video parody of Meghan Trainor’s All About That Bass.  Nerdist.com presents Team Unicorns’ Star Wars Parody, “All About the Base (No Rebel)”

Meghan Trainors original song is already pretty catchy with it’s beat and lyrics.  Team Unicorn continues that with their take.  And maybe, I’m being too factoid nerdy but their lyrics are a bit off.  In the repeated chorus, they say:

“The emperor said don’t worry about the size. He says, “It’s not like it’d be blown up twice by the same Jedi”

And I could be wrong, but I believe Lando destroyed the Death Star the second time.  Luke was in the middle of a father-son battle with an Emperor audience. So mild continuity issue with that. Other than that, pretty entertaining and otherwise, good lyrical playfulness.

Of course, this isn’t the first and it won’t be the last of music parodies to Star Wars franchise.  It’s been a while, but Galactic Empire State of Mind is still rattling in my brain.

2014 Comikaze Expo: Cosplay Pictures (day 2)

Man, it has been quite a while, since I have stepped into a convention floor.  And I am glad it was at Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo Los Angeles.  This convention is a good one because it’s just big enough to be fun but not so big that there’s too many people there and not enough room.

This year, with the popularity of Guardians of the Galaxy, there were more cosplay related to that – Starlords and Groots. And of course, Disney Frozen was represented with multiple Elsas and Annas.  Unexpectedly, I saw husband and wife, Adam and Barbara, from Beetlejuice and a couple of female Army of Darkness Ash(es).

Comic book conventions are wonderful, because the range of what cosplayers dress as varies greatly.  From current popular movies, to classics like Beetlejuice or even Big Trouble in Little China.  But as always, I’m impressed with everyone’s talent and effort that they put into their cosplay.

View the gallery below and if you’re a cosplayer, see if you can find yourself.

Also, I threw my cousin in a couple of pictures, because I like messing with the kid. It was his first time at a convention and so, I wanted to make him feel awkward standing by living comic book characters.

Long Beach Comic & Horror Con – 2012 In Pictures

Long Beach Comic & Horror Con 2012.

It was as expected entertaining with multiple panels and even a premiere of a new thriller movie, “The Red House”.  LBCHC even featured the cast of the movie in their own booth. The panels are always a good and informative, ranging from how-tos breaking into the business (either in animation or internet comics) to just entertainment panels like bringing back the Nightmare on Elm Street 3 cast.

Cosplay is always great. The Dark Knight Rises’ Bane is a popular one still. And regardless, I respect all those that put a cosplay outfit together. It takes some serious skills and patience.  Respect.

DesignerCon 2012 – Toys, Comics, and Most of All Artwork

DesignerCon 2012

The con only cost $5 online and $7 at the door. Imagine, all of the coolest artists that you’ve seen at various comic conventions all gathered in one location. And that is basically what DesignerCon is.

It is a great convention with many many artists, who were selling their custom artwork. In fact, many artists were in the middle of creating artwork live – be it painting, or even just designing artwork on vinyl toys.

Think of the things you might like. If you liked custom vinyl toys, it was there. If you liked funny comic pop culture artwork, it was there. If you like funny off color comics, it was there, including some people we have talked to before, like Ken Tanaka and ToonHole. There was an area sectioned off that they called “Suck Con”. It has a stage, and featured a talk show type set up.

I’d recommend going to this convention next year. Just remember to bring some money, so you can buy the unique paintings, buttons, posters, toys, etc. We will keep you updated on next year’s DesignerCon date and time.

Iron Man 3 – What I Know About the Mandarin is Probably Useless

The new trailer for Iron Man 3 was released last week. With it, and a photo released by Entertainment Weekly, it shows that one of the villains in the movie is “The Mandarin”. Watch the trailer below:

I loved the whole series of movies Marvel has been releasing. Even though some are a bit weak (Read: Thor), I still find them entertaining. I hope this one will not disappoint. Iron Man 2 was a bit weak and quick for the ending.  This third movie seems like it will have the same general plot like Dark Knight Rises, where Tony Stark will have to fall hard and have to rebuild himself to be better in order to conquer the villain of the Mandarin as well as his internal self.

Hildebrandt Trading card of The Mandarin

Lo Pan and the Mandarin - Do you think they shop in the same store, or they just like accessories?

As you can see the Mandarin will be played by Sir Ben Kingsley, who is a wonderful actor. He was in Hugo, Gandhi, Schindler’s List, Sneakers, Searching for Bobby Fischer and many other great movies. I’m sure his portrayal of The Mandarin will be good. Although a piece of me wonders how he’s called the Mandarin and isn’t really Chinese. (The New Karate Kid, I am looking at you). But Ben Kingsley is a great actor, so surely it can’t be bad. We can all forget Bloodrayne, right?

The first time I remember seeing the Mandarin character was in a Marvel trading card series that were painted by the Hilderbrandt brothers. It was a dynamic intense view of the villain. it accentuated where his powers came from – the ten rings on his fingers. And it reminded me of the Planeteers, how each ring has a different power.  Still, the depiction of him reminded me of Lo Pan from Big Trouble in Little China – both Asian, both with similar hair stylists and wardrobe supervisors. Although Mandarin’s powers come from alien technology, it just seemed a bit mystical to me much like Lo Pan’s abilities.

I’m not sure what angle the movie will use to play out the Mandarin’s origin and how he can overpower Iron Man/Tony Stark. Guy Pearce is in the trailer, and it would seem like he will also play a bit of a villainous part, much like Sam Rockwell’s Justin Hammer in Iron Man 2.

We shall see when the movie premieres on May 3. And with the coming holiday movies, I”m sure there will be more trailers premiering and each one revealing just a bit more of the movie.

Stan Lee’s Comikaze is Almost Here

Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo

September 15-16, 2012

Los Angeles Convention Center

With Stan Lee and Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, at the helm, this Comikaze Expo looks to be quite epic.

There is already an event called “Elvira’s Horror Hunt”, which looks to be as they call it on the site:

… outrageous and unapologetic brand of humor and horror film savvy to a competition that’s one part movie review show, one part film festival, and all parts funny as hell.

A full list of events has not yet been released on their site.

Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo states it is a Comics, Gaming, ASci-Fi, Fantasy, Anime and Horror convention, and their guest list reflects that. Todd McFarlane … you remember him? Yeah, he’ll be there.  Tara Strong, famous voice actress, Lou Ferrigno (best known as Incredible Hulk tv series), James Hong, and many more. See the full guest list here.

Last year, Comikaze had a “All That” reunion. And this year, they are continuing to renew our nostalgia (well for older folks like me) by having a “Salute Your Shorts” reunion!

This only the second year of this event, but it looks to be even bigger and better than last years! Stay tuned for more news and updates.

You can buy the full price tickets on TicketLeap here

If you are looking for some discounted tickets for that weekend head over to Goldstar.

Anime Expo, X Games, VidCon: What are you doing this weekend, L.A.?

With the fourth of July coming up fast, you lose track of time. If you live in the Los Angeles area, or are willing to travel here from wherever, there are some big events happening right now and into the weekend.

Finally, there are also a number of film and video rooms presenting anime screenings that run all day and night.

Overall, at this convention, I’ve seen really great cosplay outfits. They rival cosplay that I’ve seen at San Diego Comic-Con. Great stuff out there.  Anime Expo starts today.

(Note, some of the main events do require an additional ticket that is not covered in the regular convention ticket.)

Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, No More! Comikaze Expo is Her Final Convention Appearance

That’s right, after November 6th, Elvira, the Mistress of the Dark, will no longer be making convention appearances. As the official “spooksperson” of Comikaze Expo, Elvira (aka Cassandra Peterson) will sign autographs, pose for photos with fans and take part in various events throughout the Expo.

Elvira became a household name as the host of Elvira’s Movie Macabre, the first nationally syndicated horror movie show. The weekly series featured the sexy, outrageous movie hostess’ sharp wit and clever banter throughout her tongue-in-cheek commentary of B-movie classics. Her reign as ‘Queen of Halloween’ spans three decades and includes two feature films, her long-running series and two motion control rides. Her appearance at Comikaze Expo solidifies the event’s commitment to horror fans and promises to be a memorable experience for all.
