Lovable (Leisure Suit) Larry Laffer is Coming Back in HD Glory!

Replay Games has picked up the rights for the original Leisure Suit Larry franchise, and plans to re-release the original series. Additionally, they will begin working on an all new adventure beginning in 2012, to coincide with the series’ 25th anniversary.

The remakes will feature upgraded visuals, sound and control. However, the original sense of humor and puzzles will be kept. Thankfully, Replay Games CEO has been working closely with the Leisure Suit Larry’s creator Al Lowe.

Personally, I am really excited on this announcement. I loved the original series. After I played Leisure Suit Larry: Love for Sail!, I was eagerly hoping and anticipating any other sequel. I even bought the Leisure Suit Larry’s Casino, hoping it would have some sort of short adventure with Larry Laffer. It didn’t have one, it was strictly casino games using characters from the game.

When the new crop of Leisure Suit Larry games started to come out (Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude in 2004, and Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust in 2009), I was initially super stoked; sadly, after playing them, it left me quite disappointed.

Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude, and Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust did not feature a couple of key elements that made the original series entertaining and fun.

  1. Instead of Larry Laffer as the main character, they used his oddly more pathetic nephew Larry Lovage.
  2. The new games did not involve Al Lowe in any way.
  3. Instead of tongue-in-cheek humor, its focus was more on the T and A factor. Basically, trying to be an interactive Skin-a-max flick.

There is no release date mentioned yet for the HD re-mastered version of the original Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of Lounge Lizards. Replay will hopefully be releasing it on multiple platforms including, Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, XBLA, PSN, On-Live, and Steam.

With a bit of luck, look for more updates in the near future.

Real Steel – Because Childhood Toys Somehow Make for Good Movies

Real Steel is an action drama about a former boxer (Hugh Jackman) who, with the help of his estranged son (Dakota Goyo), gets one last shot at a comeback by building and training the perfect contender for the new high-tech sport of robot boxing.

Official Trailer:

If you haven’t guessed already from the trailer, the inspiration for this film is Mattel’s old Rock’em Sock’em Robots. Instead of the plastic toy counterparts, we’re treated with really cool shiny metal (“real steel”) robots. The film is set to be shown in regular conventional theatres but also be in IMAX theatres. So, IMAX viewers will be treated to high quality special FX.

Although the robo-boxing is the main draw for the film, it appears there will be a strong focus on the father-son relationship. I hope it all works out and doesn’t just become a fancy eye-FX-candy film, like the Transformers film series.

Hollywood seems to keep pulling their ideas from anything and everything. It’s interesting when they make movies from toys that don’t really have a storyline. Such as the upcoming movie, Battleship, inspired by the board game of the same name, looks to be more of a fancy action FX heavy movie than an action drama.

Netflix…More Like No-flix; Starz Ends Contract Renewal Negotiations

Starting in February 2012, Netflix users will no longer have access to the Starz line up of movies/shows. Starz Entertainment has ended contract renewal negotiations.

That means, exclusive Starz shows like Camelot and Spartacus won’t be available. It includes movies from Disney that Starz has exclusive licenses to. Starz CEO, Chris Albrecht, cites the reason for not renewing as a “strategy to protect the premium nature of our brand by preserving the appropriate pricing and packaging of our exclusive and highly valuable content.”

One can only speculate how this will affect Netflix users and their experience. Prices for Netflix streaming service have already risen. Upset Netflix users may have to turn alternatives like On-Demand movies/TV shows from their local cable company, or Redbox rental box at most supermarkets.

Lance Henriksen and David Finch Are Coming to Long Beach Comic Con

Long Beach Comic Con – Lance Henriksen and David Finch are coming to Long Beach Comic Con on Oct 29-30, 2011.

I remember seeing Lance Henriksen spewing milk during his “death” scene in Aliens. Ever since then, I can’t drink milk without thinking of that scene. Of course, he’s been pretty active since that memorable film moment, appearing in many other movies, in TV series, even in video games.

In fact, LBCC is his last stop for his book tour of his biography, “Not Bad For a Human – The Life and Films of Lance Henriksen”. The book features art by several artists, including Eric Powell, Sienkiewicz, Mike Mignola, Tim Bradstreet, Ashley Wood, Kelley Jones and Tom Mandrake.

On the flip side, is David Finch who hasn’t worked in the film industry like Henriksen. He started out in Top Cow Productions on the popular Cyberforce title. Since then, he’s worked on various Marvel titles, such as Ultimate X-Men, Avengers, and World War Hulk. As of January 2010, Finch is signed onto DC as an exclusive artist. He’ll be writing and drawing a new series, “Batman: The Dark Knight”.

Darth Vader say Noooooo!!

Star Wars Fans Say No to Darth Vader’s Noooooo!!!

“Noooooo!!!”

What’s that the sound of? It’s the scream of about a million Star Wars fans*, upon learning the addition of a new sound byte to their beloved original Star Wars trilogy.

The original Star Wars trilogy is being released on Blu-rays. Some review copies have come out and in the final climactic scene of Return of the Jedi, where Darth Vader saves Luke by throwing the emperor over the railing, Vader now says “No. Noooooo!!!”

Watch the following clip (from WideAsleepFilm):

Many devote fans do not like this addition. In fact, they loathe George Lucas even more. (Remember, how much hate Lucas got for adding Hayden Christensen to the end Jedi-ghost scene of Return of the Jedi?) There are more changes in the Blu-ray, such as the animal scream that Obi-wan uses to scare off the Sand people in Episode 4, or that Ewoks can blink now.

No one likes messing with a “winning formula”, especially Star Wars fans. Time and time again, it seems George Lucas, whether he means to or not, tests the loyalty of his fans by adding things that weren’t part of the original, or by creating a new trilogy that is both laughable and cringe-worthy (episodes 1-3).

As much at it hurts not to have Star Wars in Blu-ray beauty, in the end, if you don’t like it… don’t support it.

What are your thoughts on this addition?

Where’s Wall-E?

Where’s Wall-E?

I don’t know who the artist is of this beautiful image, but somewhere in the mix of classic to modern robots is Disney’s Wall-E. I haven’t found him yet, but I recognize a bunch of famous robots from all decades of television, movies, cartoons, and even reality (find the Sony original bi-pedal walking robot QRIO).

I’ve found Cylons from Battlestar Galactica, the Lost in Space robot, that robot from the old 80s movie “Millennium”, Scooter from GoBots, Dotty from Spaceballs, even the Humping Robot from Robot Chicken! The artist even put robot Bill and Ted from “Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey.” The list just goes on…

It makes me feel nostalgic.

But… I still haven’t found Wall-E. Can you?

What other characters can you all name/find?

(Update: I have found Wall-E)
