Peter Laird’s Response to the Alien Ninja Turtles

Look’s like we got an official response from Peter Laird, whose best known for co-creating Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with writer and artist Kevin Eastman, in regards to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles originating from outer space.

I have had several requests from TMNT fans during this past week to comment on the idea of the Turtles being “reimagined” as aliens for the upcoming TMNT movie to be produced by Michael Bay. A few people — who don’t seem to understand that I am no longer in control of the property — want me to stop this, somehow. Obviously, I can’t do that, even if I wanted to.

But I would actually encourage TMNT fans to swallow the “chill pill” Mr. Bay recently suggested they take, and wait and see what might come out of this seemingly ill-conceived plan. It’s possible that with enough truly creative brainpower applied to this idea, it might actually work. I’m not saying it’s probable, or even somewhat likely… but it IS possible.

However, as I have pondered this further, I have realized that in one way it IS truly a genius notion. Let me explain…

Over the years, I have made no secret of my distaste for what I consider to be the weak, facile, creatively bankrupt idea which can be summed up like this:

If FOUR Ninja Turtles are good, then FIVE (or more) Ninja Turtles MUST be better!

It was in large part this brain-dead notion that led to the creation of the execrable “Venus de Milo” character in the blessedly short-lived live action TV series  “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation”. And I can’t tell you how many times we got mail in the early years of the Turtles from people who thought it was simply an amazing idea to do a “fifth Turtle”, and how many times those same people suggested that this fifth Turtle be named “Picasso”. And many times, the brilliant idea to explain this extra Turtle was that, instead of there being just four pet shop turtles in that glass bowl in the origin story, there were really FIVE.

Sigh.

I’ll admit — I have played with the idea of more Turtles myself, a few times. There was the character of “Kirby”, the “fifth Turtle” that Kevin Eastman and I came up with for one of the several movie ideas which never came to fruition. And I created the “Super Turtles” in Volume 4 of the TMNT comics published by Mirage… and they eventually appeared in one episode of the 4Kids animated TMNT TV series.
But…

… in both those instances, I was careful to make these Turtles not just MORE  of the same, i.e. just extra TMNT. In both of the above cases, the extra Turtles were from other dimensions… and the Super Turtles, especially, were VERY different from the Ninja Turtles. I don’t remember all the details of the work we did on that “Kirby the Fifth Turtle” thing, but I DO remember being adamant that if we were going to agree to the idea of a “fifth Turtle”, it would have to be something other than the harebrained “there was an extra Turtle in the bowl, etc.” idea.

Is that too fine a line? Yeah, maybe… but to my way of thinking, anyway, it is a CLEAR line.

Anyway, to get back to the “TMNT are aliens” thing — the reason I say it could be a “genius” idea is that — for the first time — someone has come up with a way to have as many freakin’ Turtles as they want. I mean, if the TMNT are actually members of an alien race, there could be a whole PLANET of them!

Michael Bay’s Bombshell: Ninja Turtles are Aliens

Platinum Dunes, Michael Bay’s company, is producing the new live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie on December 25, 2013. The kicker however is that the pizza-loving heroes in a half-shell will be even more than simply teenage mutant ninja turtles when they return to the big screen next year.

According to Bay, who was speaking at the 2012 Nickelodeon Upfront in New York last week, said that the Turtles are really aliens!

The internet is, of course, angry!  What do you think?

Casa De Mi Padre

Casa de mi Padre opened this weekend.  The film is in Spanish with English subtitles.  It’s about Armando Alvarez who’s a rancher in Mexico, his brother comes back home and not only brings along a soon-to-be wife, but criminal trouble.  Now put Will Ferrell and an overly dramatic telenovela (soap opera), in the spirit of Black Dynamite and you get the greatness that is… Casa de mi Padre.

The good; Will Ferrell, doing what Will Ferrell does.  You either love it, or you hate it.  For some, this might be classified as part of the bad, for me, it certainly is not.  Ferrell hams it up and plays to the audience, and he does it in Spanish.  What more could you want?

Well, you get Bernal and Luna who are typically serious dramatic actors, but now they’re doing that in a comedy and it just adds to everything.  I won’t ruin the ending, but there’s a slow-mo death scene that is hilarious.

One more thing, that won’t ruin the plot, there are a number of mannequins throughout the film, it’s both creepy and hilarious.

The bad; I seriously can’t find any.  But if you’re not a fan of this type of comedy then you’ll have more to add to this section than I do.

Overall, a thoroughly entertaining comedy.  They make the film scratchy, the editing is jumpy, there are numerous continuity errors and it’s just a whole lotta fun.  If you hate reading and atypical comedies, don’t see Casa de mi Padre, but if you enjoy awkward laughing and over the top humor coupled with guns and Mexican drug lords, go see this masterpiece.

Act of Valor

Last night I went to a screening of Act of Valor, with Q&A from the writer of the film, Kurt Johnstad, who you may know from his previously penned script for the film adaptation of 300.
Act of Valor is about a team of Navy SEALs and a mission they go on.  That’s really all this movie is about, and what else would you want?  Charlie Sheen?  Let’s try to forget that movie shall we?

THE GOOD
It’s action packed.  I mean there’s a gun firing almost every minute, and if there isn’t, they’re preparing to shoot something, somewhere, somehow.  It’s almost like the movie version of 24, in that one small mission turns in to a larger scale threat than they had previous imagined.
The film was mainly shot on the Cannon 5D, for those who don’t know, it’s a still picture camera that can shoot vide0.  And it’s amazing the images that came out for this movie, especially what it can do in low lighting situations.  Another aspect of this movie that makes it almost feel like a documentary is that the filmmakers worked around the SEALs’ deployment schedule, Johnstad talked about this in the Q&A portion.
Previous to this film the Bandito Brothers did a documentary about Special Warfare Combatant-craft Crewmen, so their next project was to do one about the SEALs, but they decided to use active duty SEALs.  There’s a scene where two members have to board a Nuclear Submarine, the sub can only surface for forty minutes, longer than that and it’ll be detected, so the filmmakers at a moments notice had to film the SEALs dropping from the helicopters, using a Zodiac raft to get to the Sub and then entering the Sub before it submerges.  That’s an amazing feat, both by the Navy and the filmmakers.

Act of Valor is comprised of more scenes like this, and that’s what makes it a sort of documentary, in that these are training exercises that SEALs do all the time, but there just so happens to be a film crew documenting it.  And there’s a narrative that these scenes are cut to.

THE BAD
We all knew this was coming, the actual acting chops of the active duty SEALs.  You can tell they’re not actors, but that’s ok, cause when they’re at their best is during the mission briefings and the missions, which is most of this movie.
Other than that, I’d have to say the camera angles.  There’s an interrogation scene where it’s mainly out of focus, that was a shame.  Makes me wonder why that happened?
Then in some of the action scenes the angle was too close for my taste, I get the first person shooter aspect of it, but when they cut to the reverse angle, I would’ve appreciated a medium or wide shot.

Overall, a real fun flick.  With the stipulations Johnstad was given as a writer he managed to craft a story that drew me in, as well as the audience at this screening.  It’s quite the feat that you feel something at the end for these characters, there were a couple sniffles in the audience.
Lots of guns, action and just great shots with a new medium of filming.  This film had me from the beginning, it starts out in San Diego and then goes to the Philippines.  If you like all the Call of Duty, Battlefield games and other first person shooters, definitely give this film a view.

Superman: Man of Steel Poster Leaked

A poster for Zack Snyder’s Superman: Man of Steel has surfaced on the interwebs. Since this shot is a actually a picture of a picture, we don’t know for sure if this is official or intended to make its way on bus stops and other advertising locations.

We can’t extrapolate much info about the plot but do see what appears to be a robot in the background standing beside a man. The movie is scheduled to be hit theaters June 2013 and stars Henry Cavill, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Michael Shannon, Russell Crowe, and Julia Ormond.

This Is Daniel Craig As James Bond in Skyfall

Earlier today, the official James Bond 007 site released a still of Daniel Craig reprising his role as James Bond in Skyfall. Holding his signature firearm, the Walther PPK, we see a very focused and scruffy Bond about to make a move. It’s hard to tell what’s going on here given the focal length and shallow depth of field.

Skyfall is the franchise’s 23 film and third starring Daniel Craig as James Bond. I wasn’t as impressed with Quantum of Solace as I was with Casino Royale, but I have high hopes for Skyfall. This latest in the series is directed by Sam Mendes, who’s last movie was 2009’s Away We Go. Although Mendes has kept busy with dramas, he is no stranger to action. If you recall, earlier in Mendes’ career, he directed the critically acclaimed “Road to Perdition” and “Jarhead”.

Redbox and Warner Bros. Deal Expires. Redbox To Acquire Titles Through “Alternate Means” (UPDATED)

It turns out that Redbox understands movie lovers: if we don’t catch a film in theaters, we want to watch it as soon as possible when it comes out on DVD Blu-ray. Unfortunately, studios have yet to realize the evolving consumer/market is not the same it was years ago.

Earlier this year, Warner Brothers proposed a deal with Redbox that would impose a 56 day delay between retailer release and rental availability. Rather than agreeing to these terms in an exchange for discounted discs, Redbox has decided to take its ball and go home. As a result, Redbox will have to purchase titles from retailers at a bulk price. The first Warner Brothers title Redbox plans to make available after finding a new source is “A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas“, which comes out February 7, 2012.

Come April, eyes will be on Universal Pictures as their deal with Redbox expires. Currently, Universal’s release window is 28 days and there is no word yet if that length will be doubled.

A few questions remain:
Will these rentals be the retail versions with all bonus features?
Will this added cost be transferred to customers?
Will availability of these new Warner Brothers discs be more limited than others?

Rather than fighting with content distributors like Redbox and Netflix, studios might be better off dropping windows. It’s no secret that consumers are cutting back. We can no longer afford to buy a title that may only be watched once after purchase. Sometimes we pass on watching a movie in the theaters because the reviews don’t justify the cost of a ticket and that rationale certainly wouldn’t change when the Blu-ray release is even more than a ticket. How about we just accept purchases are for hardcore collectors and rentals are for casual watchers and just release them both into the wild at same time?

UPDATE (2/8/2012): It looks like Redbox has pushed back the release 1 week to 2/14/2012. Source: redbox
