Marvel To Give Readers Free Digital Copy Of Comics Starting June

We all love the feeling of comic pages running through our hands. The scent of a fresh print is part of the experience that helps transport us to a different reality. Starting in June, Marvel will be adding more value to this experience by offering digital copy codes in its comics priced $3.99. Essentially, those who still love print will be able to continue to stack and shelve their favorite comics while immersing themselves in stories via iOS and Android devices. Fans will no longer have to worry about protecting their paper prints while on the move.

Although screen resolutions have advanced closer towards high definition, it will be interesting to experience digital versions of comics on the screen of the New iPad, which sports a 2048 × 1536 resolution screen. At 9.7 inches, Apple’s Retina Display will unquestionably provide an optimal reading experience that is free of jagged pixels.

Act of Valor

Last night I went to a screening of Act of Valor, with Q&A from the writer of the film, Kurt Johnstad, who you may know from his previously penned script for the film adaptation of 300.
Act of Valor is about a team of Navy SEALs and a mission they go on.  That’s really all this movie is about, and what else would you want?  Charlie Sheen?  Let’s try to forget that movie shall we?

THE GOOD
It’s action packed.  I mean there’s a gun firing almost every minute, and if there isn’t, they’re preparing to shoot something, somewhere, somehow.  It’s almost like the movie version of 24, in that one small mission turns in to a larger scale threat than they had previous imagined.
The film was mainly shot on the Cannon 5D, for those who don’t know, it’s a still picture camera that can shoot vide0.  And it’s amazing the images that came out for this movie, especially what it can do in low lighting situations.  Another aspect of this movie that makes it almost feel like a documentary is that the filmmakers worked around the SEALs’ deployment schedule, Johnstad talked about this in the Q&A portion.
Previous to this film the Bandito Brothers did a documentary about Special Warfare Combatant-craft Crewmen, so their next project was to do one about the SEALs, but they decided to use active duty SEALs.  There’s a scene where two members have to board a Nuclear Submarine, the sub can only surface for forty minutes, longer than that and it’ll be detected, so the filmmakers at a moments notice had to film the SEALs dropping from the helicopters, using a Zodiac raft to get to the Sub and then entering the Sub before it submerges.  That’s an amazing feat, both by the Navy and the filmmakers.

Act of Valor is comprised of more scenes like this, and that’s what makes it a sort of documentary, in that these are training exercises that SEALs do all the time, but there just so happens to be a film crew documenting it.  And there’s a narrative that these scenes are cut to.

THE BAD
We all knew this was coming, the actual acting chops of the active duty SEALs.  You can tell they’re not actors, but that’s ok, cause when they’re at their best is during the mission briefings and the missions, which is most of this movie.
Other than that, I’d have to say the camera angles.  There’s an interrogation scene where it’s mainly out of focus, that was a shame.  Makes me wonder why that happened?
Then in some of the action scenes the angle was too close for my taste, I get the first person shooter aspect of it, but when they cut to the reverse angle, I would’ve appreciated a medium or wide shot.

Overall, a real fun flick.  With the stipulations Johnstad was given as a writer he managed to craft a story that drew me in, as well as the audience at this screening.  It’s quite the feat that you feel something at the end for these characters, there were a couple sniffles in the audience.
Lots of guns, action and just great shots with a new medium of filming.  This film had me from the beginning, it starts out in San Diego and then goes to the Philippines.  If you like all the Call of Duty, Battlefield games and other first person shooters, definitely give this film a view.

Jim Gaffigan Follows Louis C.K.’s Move, Announces New Special to Be Hosted on His Site

Awhile back, Radiohead decided to do something different. They offered their album, In Rainbows, to fans for whatever price they deemed it worthy. The experiment was a hit. More recently, Louis C.K. decided to host his latest stand-up comedy special and offer it for $5 to fans. The download was DRM free. There was nothing to stop people from freely distributing it to friends afterwards or sharing it with anonymous users via BitTorrent or physical copies. The release was a financial hit and backed by proof presented by Louis C.K. himself. Today, Jim Gaffigan, announced his upcoming stand-up comedy special through his website.

The motives behind independent distribution are easily summed: cut out the middle man and engage fans with a very reasonable price and they’ll be more than willing to buy and make the release viral. Even better, if you tell fans part of the proceeds go towards a great cause, they’ll think of the offering as a bonus. That’s what Jim Gaffigan decided to do by donating $1 from every purchase to The Bob Woodruff Foundation.

Even though independent distribution is the only option for smaller names in the entertainment industry, I applaud Gaffigan and others before and after him for taking this risk and embracing the internet as a dominant distribution platform. It will be fun to see the finished form of this project, as Gaffigan will be self-producing most of the recording.

Jim Gaffigan has been in the comedy game for quite some time. If you’ve never heard his bit on Hot Pockets, you haven’t lived. What makes Gaffigan’s brand of humor even more accessible is that it’s generally family friendly. Using quirky observations and silly voices, this special is sure to be a laugh riot. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him twice and highly recommend you check him out if he’s in your area.

Superman: Man of Steel Poster Leaked

A poster for Zack Snyder’s Superman: Man of Steel has surfaced on the interwebs. Since this shot is a actually a picture of a picture, we don’t know for sure if this is official or intended to make its way on bus stops and other advertising locations.

We can’t extrapolate much info about the plot but do see what appears to be a robot in the background standing beside a man. The movie is scheduled to be hit theaters June 2013 and stars Henry Cavill, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Michael Shannon, Russell Crowe, and Julia Ormond.

Before Watchmen Announced

DC Entertainment just announced new stories that will be written for the Watchmen Universe titled Before Watchmen.  As highly anticipated as they are controversial, the seven inter-connected prequel mini-series will show who they were before the original Watchmen.  For those who don’t know or need a mini refresher, Watchmen are a graphic novel that was published by DC comics during 1986 and 1987 and was created by Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons and John Higgins. It chronicles a group of crime fighters and their personal development and struggles as they investigate into the murder of a government sponsored superhero as they pull out of retirement.

“It’s our responsibility as publishers to find new ways to keep all of our characters relevant,” said DC Entertainment Co-Publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee. “After twenty five years, the Watchmen are classic characters whose time has come for new stories to be told. We sought out the best writers and artists in the industry to build on the complex mythology of the original.”

Before Watchmen will be collective banner for all seven titles from DC Comics which will include the following:

  • RORSCHACH (4 issues) – Writer: Brian Azzarello. Artist: Lee Bermejo
  • MINUTEMEN (6 issues) – Writer/Artist: Darwyn Cooke
  • COMEDIAN (6 issues) – Writer: Brian Azzarello. Artist: J.G. Jones
  • DR. MANHATTAN (4 issues) – Writer: J. Michael Straczynski. Artist: Adam Hughes
  • NITE OWL (4 issues) – Writer: J. Michael Straczynski. Artists: Andy and Joe Kubert
  • OZYMANDIAS (6 issues) – Writer: Len Wein. Artist: Jae Lee
  • SILK SPECTRE (4 issues) – Writer: Darwyn Cooke. Artist: Amanda Conner

Each week, a new issue will be released, and will feature a two-page back-up story called Curse of the Crimson Corsair, written by original series editor Len Wein and with art by original series colorist John Higgins. There will also be a single issue, Before Watchmen: Epilogue, featuring the work of various writers and artists, and a Crimson Corsair story by Wein and Higgins.

DC is taking a big and quite bold risk, and has put some of the best talent to work on this project.  There are already arguments to be made why this could fail or might be a big mistake, or bring a new dimension to an already awesome story.  Time will tell how this will shape up.

Alan Moore response hasn’t been happy to say the least and was quoted as saying, “As far as I know, there weren’t that many prequels or sequels to Moby-Dick.”

This Is Daniel Craig As James Bond in Skyfall

Earlier today, the official James Bond 007 site released a still of Daniel Craig reprising his role as James Bond in Skyfall. Holding his signature firearm, the Walther PPK, we see a very focused and scruffy Bond about to make a move. It’s hard to tell what’s going on here given the focal length and shallow depth of field.

Skyfall is the franchise’s 23 film and third starring Daniel Craig as James Bond. I wasn’t as impressed with Quantum of Solace as I was with Casino Royale, but I have high hopes for Skyfall. This latest in the series is directed by Sam Mendes, who’s last movie was 2009’s Away We Go. Although Mendes has kept busy with dramas, he is no stranger to action. If you recall, earlier in Mendes’ career, he directed the critically acclaimed “Road to Perdition” and “Jarhead”.

Catch Skyfall in theaters November 9, 2012
